We finally launched a new redesigned Gracepoint Berkeley website! Yay!

http://www.gracepointonline.org

Thanks again to everyone who helped, from the web team to the MYT web class grads who stayed up late coding with us. I’m very proud of everyone who pitched in to redesign not just the website, but re-coding all the nuts and bolts underneath the site like the signup forms, events, podcasts, etc. Good job!

If you find any problems or bugs (I’m sure they’re many), please don’t hesitate to submit a bug here (http://support.gracepointonline.org)

Thanks,
The team came back last week.

Thank you for praying for us. Thank you for supporting us, for buying the same food every sunday and for buying the T-shirts. We experienced so much in seven days, and the staff and students are so thankful for what God showed us. This trip has left and indelible mark on all of our lives. We all feel that we’ve been given much. And because we’ve been given much, much will be required from all of us. We hope to honor what God did by being more evangelistic at our schools and by loving the people that God has placed in our lives. We’ve all tasted the joy of working hard for the gospel. Please pray that we can continue that fervor.

After giving presentations about Alcatraz Island in their computer class on the last day of the Impact Summer Program, the former 3rd grade Impact kids, now 4th and 5th graders in Joyland, eagerly awaited the next day when they would be making a trip to Alcatraz Island themselves, along with the teachers and helpers as last activity as part of the program. They had fun riding on the ferry, leaning over to look at the water and getting excited as the ferry drew nearer to Alcatraz, making the prison building on the island look bigger every second. They were observant and curious, asking questions about why the water was green instead of blue, and wondering if there really were dead bodies in the water. As we docked, they already had ideas about what parts of Alcatraz they wanted to see, whether it was the guard tower or simply the scariest part of the prison. We split into groups and then began the audio tour, listening to the narrator talk about prison riots and notorious prisoners of the past. At one point, the kids had a chance to all try squeezing into a

solitary confinement cell. That, plus the detailed description of the past prison riots made the kids scared. No one, not even the toughest kid, left without saying it was scary. However, the kids truly enjoyed the trip and took home with them wonderful memories from the trip, like the ferry ride, the view of San Francisco, and actually walking through what was once a real prison.

Before being taken home by their drivers, the kids were presented with certificates of completion for the Impact Summer Program. This short trip went a long way in helping the teachers and kids got to know each other better, and for the kids to continue building up trust in the teachers, whom they’ve already been developing relationships with. All in all, it was the perfect way to end the month-long very first Impact Summer Program!

On Saturday, July 24th, ImpACT volunteers and students had a wonderful time of learning at the Lawrence Hall of Science, in the hills of Berkeley. The students started the day climbing and taking pictures around the sun-warmed giant whale model and the structure of DNA. Afterwards, we enjoyed the panoramic view of the San Francisco bay while eating pizza together for lunch.

At the scream exhibit, students, team leads and volunteers screamed at the top of their lungs as they rode a simulated roller coaster and struggled around the giant spinning wheel (fighting those irresistible centrifugal forces). After visiting the scream exhibit, the students and team leads understood the science behind roller coasters and why it makes us vomit (hint: it’s a coordinated response between the brain and our stomachs).

Downstairs at the animal exhibit, the students had a great time observing and patting the leopard lizard, snake and Elton, the chinchilla (in case you didn’t know, a chinchilla is a hybrid between a rodent and a rabbit). The staff at LHS invited the students to join in naming the newborn baby chinchilla, and many of the students wanted the baby chinchilla to bear their names.

At the end of the day, though tired, everyone was reluctant to end an exciting morning of science and learning.

We started our first-ever three-week long summer program for our former ImpACT students who are now part of Joyland. Our first crop consists of thirteen 4th and 5th graders. This summer program was birthed out of a both a burden and a vision to further support the students academically during the summer since it is a time when many children and youth regress in their learning due to the unstructured environment of summer vacation. Our goal is to review and practice basic skills, as well as introduce concepts they will need for the following grade level. We are partnering with Berkeley Academics and through the generous support of their resources (curriculum, facility, and computer lab), we are able to better meet the academic needs of our students.

We have drivers who go out to Oakland and throughout Alameda to pick-up the students in the morning and drop them off in the afternoon. We have other volunteers who help out with various needs throughout the day. We are offering three classes – Math, Computers, and Essay Writing – taught by our very own experienced teachers. Students have time for free play (basketball, ping pong, board games, foozball, and dodgeball) and time to eat lunch with each other, teachers and volunteers during the day as well.

It’s only been couple of days, but the students are really enjoying the summer program. We hope that this time will also be a time where they bond together as a group, bond with teachers and other adult volunteers. We want the students to know that there are many adults around them who are here to support them.

We could hardly believe we were actually there on campus tabling. It was truly God who made it happen, because we didn’t even have a single UCR student or staff among us. Technically, we weren’t supposed to be allowed to table, but thankfully, through the favor of the man who is in charge of Religious and Atheist groups on campus, we got in!

We were at risk of not being able to officially register as a campus group in time for the Freshmen Orientation tabling sessions, but through the help of people like Vivian Lee and her cousin (UCR student) we were able to get registered.

At our first tabling yesterday, we had 27 incoming freshmen signups and had personal conversations with many more. We were thankful to offer the students an alternative to the other tables, which were dominated by the fraternities and sororities.

I know this is just the beginning, as we have 9 more frosh orientations at which we will be tabling. We press on with the confidence that God is the one who began this good work in Riverside..and He is the one who will be FAITHFUL to complete all that He has in His heart to do here.

Please continue to pray for us and the work God is doing in Riverside!

Will meet y’all in our prayers!
